Description
For your consideration is this brand new Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600. First released in 1988, the reference 16600 was the main watch in Rolex’s Sea-Dweller range and has become an icon of the dive-watch world for its unmatched capabilities and smart design. It's commonly believed that the reference 16600 was produced until 2008 (just look it up online), but this watch is from 2009, so what's going on here? Well, they got it wrong. It's known only to a few, but these V serial Sea-Dwellers are a thing of legend. It's said they are a watch that was never supposed to be made. However, a last minute decision by Rolex to extend the life of this version of the Sea-Dweller resulted in an extremely small batch of them being released. It's believed that only 100-150 pieces of this V serial Sea-Dweller were every made. Rolex doesn't do so-called "limited-editions" (unlike every other brand, they don't need to), but this is just about as close as you'll get to a limited edition Rolex. Part of what makes this watch so special is its very attractive dimensions. At 40mm, the watch has the same dimensions as its Submariner brother but with slightly more thickness due to its improved water resistance (1220 metres vs 300 metres) and the gas-escape valve on the side of the case. The new versions of the Sea-Dweller from 2009 onwards have all blown out to 43-44mm in diameter with extra thickness to boot, making it a watch suitable for wear only for those with large wrists. For those with small-medium wrists, the modern Sea-Dweller range isn’t even a contender. For those with large wrists, this reference 16600 wears as well, if not better than the modern versions due to its reduced heft and dimensions that make it suitable for wear in all situations. This example features SuperLuminova luminous material on the dial and hands. Accordingly the watch has superb legibility both day and night, with the modern SuperLuminova material able to hold a charge deep into the night (and depths of the sea). The watch is fitted on a stainless-steel Oyster bracelet with solid links and Oysterlock folding clasp. The clasp features a diver’s extension system that can be used when wearing the watch around a wetsuit (or perhaps just around a thick coat if diving isn’t your thing).
